Data entry work at home jobs, a legit way to make money online

data entry work at home jobs
Data entry work at home jobs are a legitimate way to make money online. If you’ve been researching ways to make money from home, data entry is probably one of the first things you’ve come across.

Before I get started on talking about some of the better companies to go with, I want you to beware. Not all ‘data entry’ jobs are data entry jobs – there are a few ads out there that do misrepresent data entry work from home jobs. The ones that come to mind are usually called “Email Processing” or something similar. In the case of the email processing ads you see all over social media, these are typically trying to recruit you into signing up and paying for the privilege of getting others to sign up to the exact same thing you just signed up for (i.e. nothing), for a commission.

Is there any real money to be made doing data entry work from home jobs?

In my view, data entry work home typically does not pay very well. The skills required are relatively easy to come by, and everyone wants to work from home, so there tends to an oversupply of people for very few opportunities. The rate you are paid, and how you are paid, will vary from company by company. Some will pay you based on the number of words entered, others will pay you an hourly rate, others will offer you a salary as an employee, and others will open up the work for bids and the person sets their own pay.

I call this type of role a ‘pocket money’ role, because you typically can’t earn loads from it. Don’t get me wrong, money is money, and if you want to earn some and you can by doing data entry, then go for it. In fact, for many people, data entry from home is a dream job (who doesn’t want to earn money from home, right?) and for those folks I say go for it! Just be choosy about your opportunity and go with reputable companies that have a good reputation and track record.

What experience do you need for data entry work from home jobs?

The experience required will vary depending on the company, however you’ll typically need typing skills, data entry, or clerical skills. Companies will be looking for speed and accuracy, and if you’re being paid for each piece of work rather than by the hour, your speed and accuracy will be critical.

Whilst there are roles you can apply for online that pay by the hour (some may even pay superannuation and holiday pay), those roles are very hard to come by based on the pool of people wanting those roles. These types of roles will typically require to do some data entry and typing tests to assess your skill, speed and accuracy prior to engaging you.

There are some platforms that offer data entry work, as well as other types of work, that pay upon successful completion of tasks. Some platforms I have found that operate this way include:

Clickworker

Clickworker is a combination site that allows you to make money by creating or correcting texts, participate in surveys or search, and categorising data. The tasks are typically quick and fairly simple. You can also make money through referring the program to others.

You will need to complete a prequalification language test. The test consists of 72 questions, and you need to achieve at least 95%. You cannot repeat the test, so it’s important to read the questions carefully. Whilst it says that test may take up to 40 minutes, it took me less than 15 minutes.

Mechanical Turk

Mechanical Turk is owned by Amazon, and is a global marketplace, where jobs requiring human intelligence are posted. There are thousands of tasks to be completed at any given time, across a diversity of task types.

The types of tasks that are available include image/video processing, data verification and clean-up, information gathering, and data processing.

  1. Dear Melissa,

My wife and myself were working in a Data Entry company for 3+ years so we do have some experience in Data Entry. Now we both are working from home and while checking for Data Entry jobs online found your helpful post.

We are aware of Mechanical Turk and Upwork, we tried them. We earned money with Fiverr gigs but we are not aware of Clickworker and it’s sound interesting. We are planning to give Clickworker a try and it’s on our list.

Thanks for the helpful information and your post means a lot to me because you know very well there are many scams online and it’s really hard to find genuine companies.

    Thanks for sharing!

    Much Success,

    Paul

  2. Hi Melissa. You’re right, more people want to work from home so even if it doesn’t pay a lot, I think there’s still a market for data entry jobs. It’s interesting and it’s good to know that there are options. You got me curious, will take a look at Clickworker and Mechanical Turk. I just know about Upwork and Fiverr. I’ve signed up before for Upwork but noticed that hourly rates are quite low, so I didn’t proceed with that anymore. Thank you for sharing your preferred way to make money. It seems so much better for me to make money by creating your own website.

  3. I was looking for a work from home job to earn some extra money to supplement my income. I have experience in data entry job. Even though the online data entry job does not pay much if I can have a few projects from a different company, it will be good for me.
I will start with the 4 companies that you recommended. Thank you.
