Compose.ly pitch themselves as having rigorously tested and skilled writers that are handpicked against individual projects. They are content marketing experts, providing SEO ready content that ranks.

You’ll need to undertake an assessment before being accepted as a Compose.ly writer.

Freelance Writing: how it works

You can write across a variety of styles including:

  • Blog posts
  • Web pages

To get started, you’ll need to sign up to Compose.ly. This will involve filing in your basic information, accepting the terms of service, and completing a standard writing test. If you pass, you will be invited to join the platform.

Next, you’ll need to create a writer profile to let clients that you’re available, together with your skills and experience. You’ll be provided a selection of jobs catered to your writing strengths and preferences. You have the ability to choose which jobs you want and which you don’t.

Once you have been assigned to a writing project, you can commence and submit your completed work. You can communicate with the client if you’ve got any queries, feedback, or revisions required. It is all done within the platform. When your work has been approved by the client, your Compose.ly account will be credited with your earnings.

Projects completed between the 20th of the previous month and the 4th of the current month will be paid on the 5th.

The site does not disclose the rates payable to writers accepted onto the Compose.ly platform.

Like most other writing and freelance platforms, you typically would not be able to sustain a full time income through only Compose.ly. You would want to do this in conjunction with other employment, or whilst signed up to several other platforms offering a similar service. Compose.ly is definitely only a side gig, or to be used as a supplement to other income.

Is Compose.ly legit?

Compose.ly is absolutely legitimate, and if you enjoy writing and can produce high quality content with a knowledge of SEO, then Compose.ly is a good option for you. Be prepared to go through a fairly rigorous assessment process before being accepted as a writer.

A great thing about Compose.ly is that you don’t need to pay to sign up. There are quite a few freelancing sites that require you to pay a fee to join, which can be a barrier to entry for many.

There are no Better Business Bureau (BBB) ratings for either Compose.ly or Freelance Writing. There are no sitejabber reviews for Compose.ly, but a few for Freelance Writing, with the majority being very positive:
